Spain rewards the traveller who lingers. Moorish courtyards, pintxos at midnight and a quiet cove on Menorca: here is how to shape a journey that feels unhurried and entirely your own.

A Country That Refuses to Be Rushed
Spain begins late and ends later. Dinner is at ten. The streets are loudest at midnight. And somewhere in between, the afternoon dissolves into a long, golden pause that you will quickly learn to love. To travel well here is to surrender to that rhythm, and to let the country reveal itself in layers.
It is also one of the most varied countries in Europe. In a single journey you can wake in a Moorish palace, lunch beside the Atlantic, and end the week on a hidden Mediterranean beach. The trick is choosing a few places and giving each of them time. That is exactly how we design your itinerary.
Andalusia: Light, Water and Stone
Begin in the south. In Granada, the Alhambra rises above the city in rose-coloured stone, its courtyards cooled by fountains and shadow. Visiting at opening time, or after hours with a private guide, changes everything. The crowds fall away and the carved plasterwork seems to whisper. The UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Alhambra and Generalife explains why it is considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the world.
From there, wander on to Seville for orange blossom and flamenco in a private tablao, then to Cordoba for the forest of arches inside the Mezquita. Stay in a restored palace with a courtyard pool, and let your specialist arrange an evening of horses, sherry and tapas in the countryside near Jerez.
The Basque Coast: Where Food Becomes Culture
If Andalusia is about light, the Basque Country is about appetite. San Sebastian holds more Michelin stars per square metre than almost anywhere on earth, yet its soul lives in the old town bars, where pintxos are passed across the counter with a glass of crisp txakoli.
- Private cellar visits: Cider houses and Rioja bodegas, with the family who makes the wine.
- Market mornings: Shop with a local chef, then cook the catch together.
- Bilbao and beyond: The Guggenheim after hours, then coastal fishing villages by car.
Our team has eaten at the tables we recommend. We know which ones deserve a reservation months ahead, and which quiet kitchens will never appear in a guidebook.
The Balearics: A Quieter Mediterranean
Mallorca is more than its reputation. Beyond the resorts, there are stone villages in the Tramuntana mountains, olive terraces falling to the sea, and fincas where breakfast is served beneath almond trees. Menorca is gentler still, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve of white-washed harbours and empty coves. Ibiza, away from the clubs, offers sunrise yoga, yacht days and the island's old-world interior.
A private charter, with a skipper who knows which bay will be empty today, makes all the difference. You anchor, swim, lunch on deck, and return when the light turns amber.
Where to Stay
Spain is exceptional for character stays: converted monasteries, wine estate hotels, cliffside retreats and city townhouses with rooftop terraces. We choose properties we have personally visited, so you can trust that the room, the service and the setting are as they should be.
When to Go
Spring and autumn are the finest seasons for the mainland. Andalusia is gloriously green and mild from March to May, and again from late September to early November. July and August bring intense heat to the south, though they suit the Basque coast and the islands. The official Spain tourism board is a helpful resource for festivals and seasonal events, which we can build into your dates.
Travelling Well in Spain
- Eat late: Book dinner at nine or after, and enjoy a long, unhurried table.
- Choose fewer bases: Three or four places across ten days is richer than seven in a week.
- Combine with Portugal: Spain pairs beautifully with Portugal for a complete Iberian journey.
- Travel privately: A driver-guide opens doors that public tours cannot.
