Built by Ramesses II in 1264 BC and relocated in one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century to save it from the rising Nile, Abu Simbel is a monument of extraordinary scale and precision. Twice yearly, on Ramesses' birthday and coronation date, sunlight penetrates 60 metres into the inner sanctuary to illuminate the king's statue.

The largest ancient religious complex ever built, Karnak's hypostyle hall contains 134 colossal columns arranged in 16 rows — each one large enough to park a London double-decker bus on top. Construction here spanned 2,000 years under 30 different pharaohs, and the sheer accumulated ambition of the place is impossible to overstate.

Where the Nile narrows between pink granite boulders and the Egyptian world transitions to Nubian culture, Aswan has been a frontier city and trading post for 5,000 years. The Nubian villages on the opposite bank, the Philae Temple rising from its island, and the Unfinished Obelisk still lying in its granite quarry make Aswan one of Egypt's most quietly rewarding stops.

The Egyptian Red Sea is home to some of the finest coral reefs in the world, with visibility regularly exceeding 30 metres and a biodiversity that rivals any ocean on earth. The Brothers Islands, Elphinstone Reef, and Daedalus Reef are legendary among divers for schooling hammerheads, oceanic whitetips, and pristine coral walls.
